Hint, it's the tattoo sleeves. It's very low-key, but I'm a teacher and many of my students don't celebrate Halloween. I got many double takes and "um, Miss - are those real???" Ha!

I received two great packages in the mail yesterday - from my knitty Spooky SP and my BOO-ty pal! pictures to come!!

Avoiding Work

Good thing about school: wireless internet. And boy do I need it. It's just been such a frustrating day. Repeat to self: they are only kids. But they act so old! It's only an act right? They say and do such stupid things though. Grr. And tonight I have to stay late. My knitting is in the car - I'm hoping to knit a little tonight, as I don't have to actually do anything, just be a presence in support of the kiddos. Gotta get going on the presents!

Snakes on a Sock!
It was a fun pattern, and I thought I worked through it quickly, but that might be from the two-circulars - it always seems to go faster with them...

Yesterday I hit up Sit N Knit - what a cute shop! The staff was very friendly too and willing to go downstairs and look for something if it wasn't already out. I've got all the yarn I need now for Christmas presents.

Today Jackson and I went to the "All Breeds HOWL-O-WEEN" parade and then the dacshund rescue Hall-o-weenie Fest. He won 3rd place for his costume and was also a race winner! Yay!

Wrong Number

I tried to call Dan on his cell phone from the house phone. This means that I had to actually remember the phone number, instead of scrolling through my "contacts" or hitting the speed dial #. Some strange guy answered the phone and I asked for Dan (in case someone else answered it for him) and was told,

"No, there's no Dan here. You misdialed the number."
(PAUSE)
"What number were you trying to dial"

Well, obviously I was trying to dial DAN'S number!

I was off by one number. Sheesh.

I've got a new camera coming - hoping tomorrow...

I bought Jackson a few new Halloween shirts at Old Navy (great deal!) but, I think they have redesigned their XS dog shirt as they are tight on him and he hasn't changed his shape too much! I'll return them and exchange for the S, hopefully, and then take photos with the previously mentioned camera.

I started knitting a scarf for one of my aunts for a Christmas present, and realized that I did a bunch of it wrong! It's a two row repeat, and I messed up. For crying out loud self, get a cute stitch marker and use it! You have them. That's what they are their for!!

So far, in thinking about my Christmas gift list, this is what I've got to do:
1.Scarf: Herringbone Lace pattern, Ellyn Cooper yarn - Caribe Irisee - yarn's bought / wound up. This is the one with the stupid mistake I didn't pick up on.

2. Skinny Scarf a la Knitty Gritty on DIY for my cousin - yarn's bought (Classic Elite Premier in two shades of lilac/purple and a smokey grey)
2b. Back to School Cloths are also a possibility for my cousin.

3. Felted Bag with Mitered Squares for one or more of the ladies in my family. Need yarn.

4. Grape Hyacinth Lace Scarf maybe for my cousin's girlfriend. Have some nice pinky Noro that would work nicely.
4a. Also for the cousin's girlfriend, considering Fetching

5. Something for my cousin, a cop. Guys are tough. Maybe fingerless gloves? Maybe a nice scarf that has a touch of cashmere in it?

6. Ditto for my dad.

7. Ditto for my baby brother.

note: I haven't yet made anything for my dad or baby brother... i'd like to... I think the b.b. would be happy with a hat / gloves / scarf (maybe). Dad's not really a scarf guy, but would probably wear one that I made.

8. A set of Fuzzy Feet for a family of my friends: Mom, Dad, kiddo...

9. Other "stuffs" as needed.

10. Oooh, almost forgot. I've got my "HOPE" and "DONALD" yarn and started the scarf for my grandmother, but it's too stripey. I need a pattern for sockweight yarn that blends them together... ideas??
10b. This project would be for Nana, who is going through chemo. She may loose her hair again. Last year I made her a Shedir and she liked it - I think I should make her a box of silly hats: the hallowig, the chicken viking hat, the princess leia hat, and the new knitty surprise!

This weekend I won't be going to Rhinebeck - bummed, but maybe next year. Instead, I'll hit the mall and then check out Sit-n-Knit and CreativeFibers....

Woosh

There went the weekend.
We were up in Maine for a wedding - way out in Baaaah Haaaa-Baaa. It was gorgeous and the event went off perfectly! However, I misplaced my camera (boohoo) - maybe someone will find it.

On the way up, I finished my Snakes on a Sock! yay! And I started these in the LimeNViolet Lisa Souza yarn

In the spirit of Socktoberfest, here's a bit of my sock history:
When did you first start making socks? I taught myself maybe 4 years ago. I'm not sure why really, but I bet it's because I liked the variegated colorways. I followed an online tutorial that had close-ups of what happened. I remember holding the dpns very close to my eyes (those stitches seemed so tiny!)

What was your first pair? How have they "held up"? My first pair were a slouch kinda pattern using a sockotta yarn. They have held up pretty well, but Jackson took to them last year and now they have a hole bitten in them. They are a little big and the toes are grafted so the seam doesn't go across the line of toes, but rather from the front to the back of the foot.

What would you have done differently? I don't know...maybe pay a little more attention to the finishing of the toe.

What yarns have you enjoyed? Lorna's Laces, Koigu, Sockotta, and Spunky Eclectic! I have some of Claudia's Handpainted and Cherry Tree Hill waiting in the wings. And I did join Scout's Swag club.

What's the preferred method? Two circulars. Love it, and it seems to take less time than dpns. I think I would like to try magic loop.

What's your preferred heel? I really like the flap.

How many pairs have you made? 6 pairs, and counting.

Needle Check

I originally planned to give myself a break at school today and make a post about "what's on my needles" but as today has gone on I think I may need to invest in some retail therapy...that could be dangerous.

So, on my needles:
1. Banff - I've got the back done and started a sleeve last night.
2. the zebra from vogue scarves two - just have to finish the leg, weave in ends, add eyes, fringe, ears.
3. Snakes on a Sock - one sock is done, the second sock I'm ready to do the heel flap.
4. I started the sushi wallet a while ago but didn't read the directions completely and needed to use an additional needle. So, it's just sitting in the bag.

I'll probably cast on for these really cute pumpkins because I can't resist.

I'm quite excited about the yarn I'll be getting from Ruby Sapphire in the Hope and Bekka colorways. I am going to have a "Donald" colorway made up and use that with the Hope to make a scarf I saw in scarf style for my grandmother for christmas.

Yesterday when I got home there was a great package waiting for me from Lynne - she's been very aware of the fact that red / pink are not my favorite colors, however I love everything she sent (and I'm keeping it all!)

There's candy - Skittles, Laffy Taffy, Red Fish!! -- my dentist will thank you!
There's ya--rn! in red and white. - I have not yet had the luxury of working with Any debbie bliss, so I'm very excitied for that. And I've started a "cotton / dishcloth" yarn collection and I do not yet have red/white!
There's lip gloss - how did you know that I am miserable without lip gloss? The more the better!
There's an apron that she made! (scroll down to Sept19!) - I love this the best I think! Wow - love the fabric and the pocket!
There's the Holiday Knits book - perfect! I'm planning to make the scarf in there ASAP~!
There's also a great big mug with red / pink flowers filled with different teas! Raspberries and Cranberry - yum!
And (can you believe it, there's more!)
There's a notes / small file holder, and dpn point protector, and a tape measure.

Everything was wrapped in pink tissue paper and there were even pink packing peanuts!
Thank you soo much! This was a lot of fun - your package will be leaving my house on Monday!

When that happens, along with Lewis and Clark setting off on their journey, I'll be caught up!

Fall TV LineUp

It's a small world. Ugly Betty is a show I was going to give at least one night of attention to this fall season. But now, I most definetly will. There's an article in the local paper about two actresses from my town. I went to high school with (and costume-crewed a lot of the shows with)Becki. Interesting.

Her brother, Matt, with whom I also attended high school and crewed on the shows, has been on one of my favorite shows, but not one of the highly anticipated returns: Gilmore Girls.

I'm watching Survivo, Lost, Amazing Race and Sopranos

I have received some fabulous packages...
YarnAboardII Explorers Lewis & Clark arrived via Jill - there's a great sock guide (a mreasurement guide for feet of all sizes! I don't have one of those and was thinking I should!), Lovely Cherry Tree Hill sock yarn, and stitch markers (from someplace that I don't have the link to right now... they are just stunning!), and a little bag she made - love love love it! Now I have to get it in the mail for the next person.

Favorite Color Swap from CJ and oh my word she rocks!!!! You could not imagine a better blue-green-purple assortment of goodies! Candy (Jolly ranchers and Spree and mike & Ikes my favorites!), napkins that match my kitchen, CDs of some Dave Matthews that was missing from my collection and "Country" which I plan to listen to this weekend, blue-green-purple post its, sharpie marker, purple crate / basket, green box (it's going to hold my dpns!) and in a totally Lime-n-Violet would be so proud of me for prancing around the kitchen snuggling up to the yarn - Habu Cashmere Yarn in an absolutely lucious green... AND (I told you she rocked) 2 beautiful facecloths that are mine all mine, not for the hubby shaving his face :) I was completely spoiled beyond belief!

And last but not least, my One Skein Secret Pal sent an adorable little purple felted bag with cute buttons on it - Thanks Becky I love it! I had a lot of fun doing this secret pal exchange and look forward to reading more in your blog!

School is absolutely swamping my life right now.

I'm trying to decide if I dare venture to Scout's swag club.

I'm thinking about driving up and back when it's Saturday time for Rhinebeck - anybody want to carpool from Newe Haven area?

Patternworks Catalog (Rant)

How nice to come home to fun mail (catalogs) - I love catalog shopping. Even just to put ideas in my head that I can later find at the outlets or TJMaxx / Marshalls. Patternworks arrived today - as I started flipping through it I was confused, thinking "Doesn't Knitpicks sell only their own yarn now?" Then I realized this wasn't the knitpicks catalog.

Anyway, I'm annoyed. Page 4? The Polo Sweater? Boxy and off the shoulders is modernizing? Isn't it 80s? Page 12, Magnum Yarn. Only 3 balls of yarn to make the Cardigan (which I actually think it cute). The yarn is $25. I can't justify $75 for a sweater that's only 3 balls of yarn. Ick. I didn't make it all the way through the catalog. Instead, I went to visit LimeNViolet to get the Snakes on a Sock pattern - I think I'm going to make them out of my "Pink is the new Black" yarn from Spunky Eclectic. Yes, that's what I'm going to do, and I'll start on it tonight / tomorrow on the way to the Mets game!

Behind

I haven't even been in school a full week yet and I'm behind (and still with out my camera - can't figure out why suddenly the laptop refuses to "see" the camera).

I received a wonderful package for the colorswap of neutrals from Heatherly - white tea bath/body stuff, tea cup / saucer, ribbon yarn, wool yarn, and other goodies.

I finished these socks in this yarn - it's a little snug getting it on, but overall I'm pleased.

I've got to pack up and send out for the the favorite colorswap and oneskein swap.

School started out on a good foot, but I found out I didn't pass my portfolio and I'm pissed. I've got a background in Chemistry. Getting my masters and passing my thesis was hard, teaching - not so much! This is ridiculous.

Chocolate

Still working on the camera/photos issues...

Started putting back my classroom together, in bits and pieces. Gosh I can't believe that it's time again! Soooo soon!

I finished knitting a scarf (but no photos obviously.)

I finished Cute. I enjoyed it.

I was indulging myself in some chocolate because I wanted to (don't want to be cranky). And while I have sent this in packages to people before I hadn't actually tried it till now - it's so yummy! And it comes with a little "trading card" - this one had something kinda like this: a Weevil Beetle - "This striking white weevil posed for us at the side of a trail leading to a remote village in Sulawesi. Weevils are also called snout beetles; characterized by an elongated region in front of their eyes. Larvae of these beetles are usually shaped like the letter "C" and are pale to white in color and lack legs. Maybe you have heard the expression, "weevils wobble but they won't fall down."

Huh. Educational, earth friendly chocolate. I like it!

Better than Nothing

So, I'm having difficulty with my camera so I can't upload / show you any photos of my trip to Washington, DC or some of the awesome swaps I have received. And I got a call yesterday from the principal - I'm due at school today for a 9:00 meeting. Teachers start back next week, the kids on the 28th... Summer's done!

Gardening woes.

I've been waiting...and waiting...and waiting... for the emergence of seedlings, leaves, flowers, and fruits in some cases and now I'm waiting for the tomatoes to turn color. I noticed from afar today that one or two of them started to turn orange-ish! Yay for that!

After our walk with Jackson, we went over to my little garden to check it out. And I noticed bits of brown hexagonal shaped turds.... Then I saw lots (okay, one, then I saw two, then I saw another, and another - maybe 5 total) of these "little" buggers:



Eewww!

A little googling turns up that they are Tomato Hornworms. Does this make me a really gardner?

Does it make me less of a science person to be simultaneously disgusted and impressed by them? Their camouflage is amazing! (also, check out What's That Bug? for more interesting caterpillars! We got rid of them all (hopefully) before I could think that I should have gotten the camera!

This site also has some interesting information - they exist in a parasitic relationship with wasps!

Children's Books

There have been several posts 'round the blogs about books you read when you were younger - brings back some great memories. And then this morning I started googling....I have a very dear place in my heart forever for the following:
Charlotte's Web
Made me believe that spiders are special and the the animals can talk! I read this book over and over and over and over again! Did you know there's a new movie in the works?! The trailer almost makes me teary! Julia Roberts as Charlotte is perfect!

I also read and reread the Little House on the Prairie set - my set has yellow covers, and I think there's only 7 books, not 9. Either way. I think those are the books with the pages that are so soft to the touch and yellowed.


This book, Starring Sally J. Freedman as Herself was my first introduction to World War II books. (This lead to my reading and rereading of Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl) I loved all the Judy Blume books I read! Need to reread them.

I also was big into Trixie Belden. Not by choice initially though. My Mom thought Nancy Drew was too advanced for me. I was always a good reader and read above level... so I read all the Trixie Belden books that the library had and then was allowed to read the Nancy Drew series.

Other fond favorites from my childhood: Bread and Jam for Frances, If you give Mouse a Cookie, Bridge to Terabithia, The Borrowers, any of the Roald Dahl books, Shel Silverstein's books, Where the Wild Things Are,Amelia Bedelia, Goodnight Moon (who didn't have this book? It's the first book I remember!), my dad used to read me stories from theBrothers Grimm. Gosh there are just so many wonderful books!

Now that I'm a teacher, I have some new favorites -
Miss Nelson is Missing (if only for the evil Miss Viola Swamp! I constantly think: Viola Swamp is not amused when the kids act up!).
I use Diary of a Worm in my science class - the kids (7th graders) really get a kick out of it! (Look, finger puppets!) And I do use Diary of a Spider as well, but prefer the worm. I am also highly amused by Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! - worth a look though - you'll be laughing very hard!!

Books & Movies (post the 4th)

So this weekend we finally went to see Pirates: Dead Man's Chest Fun, fun, fun! I think that when it's all done it will make a great trilogy. I did like the first one better, but enjoyed the effects and antics! And it has Bill Nighy! Who I really enjoy - and he was great in Girl in the Cafe - it had some of the awkwardness of Lost in Translation, but yet it's own different turn. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Bookwise I finished My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult - excellent! Very very heart wrenching.

Craft Room (Post the 3rd)

I've been trying to bring more order to my craft room. Why would I bother - I'm the only one in there! I want to be able to leave the door open, not to hide the chaos. Although it does help keep Jackson away from the yarns. Anyway, there is some progress being made!

And though I didn't get a picture of it, my dog (a mini-dachshund!!) was able to work at The General (A Starfish) for little more than 3 weeks before he got the stuffing out!! We do have a round disc as well that is also a Tuffie and I would get him more of those in the future. Still can't believe he tore it up! In the meantime, he's got a Frog Crackler that is holding his attention well enough for the time being. And a new tennis ball toy that he got as part of a swap-bot.com swap.

Now he's on his side sleeping, just like a real dog!

Gardening (Post the 1st)

I can't find the "Before" picture of my garden / raised beds... I set it up around Memorial Day this year and transplanted my seeds outside. As of this past week, this is what I can see:
The driveway curves down alongside the right of the photo, Jackson is there (not really for scale as he's so small anyway!). This is one of the beds. You can see the Kong Hybrid Sunflower and the Elf Hybrid Sunflowers.



In this next photo, you can see both beds (say if you were standing in the driveway). The bed on the left has the 2 varieties of sunflowers, baby watermelon (down low behind the kong sunflowers) and peppers (behind the sunflowers). The bed on the right has tomatoes, cucumbers, assorted butterfly / hummingbird flowers, and had carrots but I already harvested those.



Patience is difficult thing for a gardener (and a knitter sometimes) - I'm chomping at the bit for the tomatoes to turn red!!

It's still the weekend!

Almost unbelievably - the past few days have felt like I've already been through Saturday and Sunday! Vacation is so very nice! Thursday / Friday we were in New York City to see my brother do his stand-up comedy with SuperEgo at Parkside Lounge - you can see the bit he did at his blog, here - I'm quite proud of him and though I may be biased, he brought the crowd and did the best job :) Aside from this guy Morty that rapped (5 pages worth) about proper grammar and cliches.

Today we're waiting now for friends to come over for a cookout.

I tried knitting the rpm socks (summer knitty) but apparently can't count. It just wasn't working and I could barely cast-on. Bugger.

And this weekend is supposed to be a hot one. Keep an eye on children, the elderly, and your pets!

I finished a pair of socks in just over a week - even with the knowledge that I can devote my time to knitting, I still can't believe it! I used this pattern because I had the exact yarn and needles! And they worked out perfectly! My best socks yet!See?

Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock in Neon colorway - and I still have half a skein leftover? One skein got me through one sock completely and past the heel turn (maybe a third of the way down the foot on the second?) Jackson's impressed.

Book #1 of the summer

I'm usually much better about reading once school gets out or even those summer days start up. This summer I think I just really had to let my brain settle after the hectic school year. Today I picked up and finished: the five people you meet in heaven - loved it! So sad and sweet and just cute. Makes me think of my family members / loved ones that have passed away. For the most part I wouldn't know who they meet or get to find out about, but I do wonder if my grandfather gets to find out anything about his father, who as far as my family knows was a deadbeat lowlife.

Not enough time!

There's a new knitty is up! Wow - there's so much to choose from! Must knit Fetching, Perdita, knucks, rpm, lickety split (though I might just do a regular sock based on the colors / pattern / back buttons without the split toe thing)... I just placed an order with knitpicks (sock yarn, sport for Green Gables, sport in blues / greens / purples for a mitered square blanket)

True. I undid the 4 pattern repeats I had done and started over. Being lefty makes me doubt myself with charts and decreases. But I think we're doing well right now. No pictures yet, saving that for #4: Potential Uses


I finished a sock yesterday. Start to finish with that sock? 3 days!! Holy chickens! I immediately cast-on for sock #2 last night and have been working on it on and off so far today. We're having Dan's family over for a cookout so maybe I'll get some knitting in then. Photos when they are done, which if I can keep up this pace will be very soon!

I missed Canada Day - I'm an American, but that's really no excuse. Especially when my favorite music group is Barenaked Ladies - God Bless Canada for that :^) And then, I read Miss Harlot's post and was going to be nerdy and point her to Canada's Science side but saw she had 257 comments! Wow. So I'm posting it here.

I started working on a sock yesterday - Lorna's Laces yarn, an internet pattern - I had the exact yarn and needles and dove right in. I love knitting on two circulars - it really goes fast! By the time we got to Long Island yesterday, I had already completed the leg and heel flap. Today is for turning.
